If ever there was going to be a time when you would be struck by doubt and uncertainty it's now.
A couple of years ago, the only news story was Brexit. Then came Covid and now there's the war in Ukraine.
I don't know about you, but five years ago, I didn't predict any of them happening and I certainly didn't plan what to do if they did.
These seismic changes have had a major impact on many peoples mental health. Dealing with uncertainty is a real challenge and one which is causing major issues for many business owners. The feeling that events have overtaken you and that you have no control over what is happening can be deeply concerning.
The truth is that you cannot control everything. Issues can be divided into three categories:
- Things you can control
- Things you can influence
Things you cannot control or influence
Worrying about things you cannot control or influence is what may be called 'pointless mental activity' and concentrating on this is the source of the anxiety. It's far better to concentrate on the things you CAN control and the things you CAN influence.
While there are some things you may never have direct control over, you may find that your area of influence expands or contracts depending on your context, relationships, roles, and personal capacity. Consider how you might grow your sphere of control. What relationships or skills could you build on that would broaden your area of either infuence or control?
Even with the things you cannot control or influence, you can control how you respond to them. You can respond to situations from the EFFECT side of the equation, or choose to respond from the CAUSE side of the equation.
What exactly is the Cause and Effect equation? Cause means that you take responsibility for creating what you want in your life and what you achieve or set a goal to achieve. You view the world as a place full of opportunities rather than a place full of obstacles placed in your way. To be at Cause means you accept that you have a choice about who you are, what you do and how you react to other people, their emotions and responses to you and to the events around you.
When you’re at Effect, you’re likely to blame other people or situations for what you don’t have or what you’ve failed to achieve in life. When you’re at the Effects side of life, you perceive yourself as disenfranchised and almost powerless. Maybe you’re waiting for “something” to turn up; for the Universe to miraculously dish out a solution to the obstacles you stumble up against time after time?
You’re in victim mode; a victim of self-imposed circumstances and you often operate – sometimes without even realising – purely out of fear. Fear of never achieving what you want; fear of losing what you do have.
Wouldn’t it be better to begin to operate from a position of empowerment?
You have a choice. You have the power to step out of the model of the world you live in and to begin to create your world the way that you want it. You merely need to recognise that it’s your responsibility … nobody elses. So stop and think; if you’re not happy with your lot, what action can you take to change it? What’s the one thing that you can do right now to move towards a better, more fulfilling place?
